I've heard more than one old farming family say they had a few shetland ponies around as pets. Here's an example -- harness up the pony, build a little cart from leftover farm-machinery parts, send the kids off to ride across the unplanted fields...and in 70 years we'll shake our heads slowly when we see a parent putting a helmet on their kid so they can ride their Big Wheel. Living without central air and electric heat either must've made kids bounce better. Kids these days shatter if they trip on their shoelaces.
